The Manchester Connection

An easy-to-reach location combined with world-class research makes Manchester the ideal choice for your location or collaboration.

Dynamic, entrepreneurial, multicultural, pioneering, influential – that’s Manchester. A thriving cosmopolitan city, constantly reinventing itself as it develops and expands. Manchester is the commercial, financial, educational and cultural capital of the UK’s largest economic region outside London. It is the North West’s regional centre for finance, commerce, retail, culture and leisure, home to a major international airport and one of the largest student populations in Europe. It has transformed itself from an industrial city dependent on manufacturing to a thriving, modern, dynamic, international city. Whilst manufacturing remains important, Manchester has attracted growth in the knowledge- based economy and is in the top ten of European cities for business location. The city is also the key economic driver for the region, voted Britain’s best city for business in a national survey of over 5,000 of the country’s biggest employers in 28 cities.

The cost of living in Manchester and the north west of England is on average 33% cheaper than in London and the south east. Salary rates in Manchester are extremely competitive when compared to London and the South East. At the same time the city lower cost of living offer the opportunity for individuals to enjoy the region’s enhanced quality of life.

The UK Government has reduced Corporation Tax levels to encourage business development and investment. According to the latest data, UK Corporate Tax rates are among the lowest in Europe when compared to the other main EU economies, and compare favourably to other major global economies. Also, generous R&D tax incentives are available to encourage innovation in the UK. The R&D tax credit works by allowing companies to deduct up to 150% of qualifying expenditure on R&D activities when calculating their profit for tax purposes. Companies which are SMEs can, in certain circumstances, surrender this tax relief to claim payable tax credits in cash from the HM Revenue & Customs. Large companies and SMEs involved in R&D may also be able to claim R&D capital allowances.
