Martino Picardo

Managing Director

Martino is the Managing Director of UMIC and has a PhD in Biochemistry from Cardiff University. Having spent 4 years at Baylor College Of Medicine, Houston, in Cardiovascular research as a Welch Foundation Fellow. Martino joined Amersham International in 1991 and subsequently went on to manage the R&D; Technology Transfer Group, based in Cardiff.

Following the merger of Amersham with Pharmacia Biotech, Martino became the Science Director for the Cardiff site before becoming a Business Manager for Manchester Biotech Ltd. and subsequently Manchester Innovation Ltd. in June 1999. Martino was part of a team that successfully applied for NWDA and ERDF funding for the Core Technology Facility, for which Martino was Project Director. The CTF was officially opened in July 2006.

When The University of Manchester and UMIST merged, a new company (University of Manchester Incubator Company, UMIC) was created by The University to manage not only its Bioscience Incubator and CTF, but also the North Campus ICT Incubator and future development of an Incubator at Central Park (One Central Park, opened July 2006). Martino is General Manager of UMIC and MICL and has been appointed to the Board of UMIC and MICL (Manchester Incubator Company Ltd).

Martino has been a non-executive Director of Cartesian Technologies Inc. (2000-2002) and was on the Scientific Advisory Board of Matrical Inc until August 2005. He has been the University Board representative for Motac Neuroscience Ltd and Multiplex Photonics Ltd. Martino was appointed to the BioNoW NWDA Biotech Cluster Steering Committee in 2004 and is an active member of the Society for Biomolecular Sciences, American Society of Cell Biology and Biochemical Society.

Most recently, Martino has helped to set up a Medicinal Chemistry partnering and consultancy business (MedChemCo; www.chemistrypartnering.com and www.medchemco.co.uk) and is currently acting CEO and on the Scientific Advisory Board.

Ian Jackson

Finance Director

Ian is the Finance Director and Company Secretary for UMIC, and is involved in both the Biotech Incubators and the High Tech Incubators.

He qualified with Price Waterhouse in Manchester before moving out to Brazil. He returned to England as Chief Internal Auditor of Kraft Foods of Europe and then on to be Finance Director and Company Secretary for Harp Lager. He later spent several years with an International Exhibition Contractor before moving to a major importer and exporter of electric and electronic equipment.

Ian has been with the company since its first few days, some ten years ago, being deeply involved with the construction of the original Manchester Biotech Incubator and more recently with the funding and construction of the Core Technology Facility.

Alison Warren

Events Co-ordinator

Alison joined UMIC in 1999 as Receptionist, after working at Whitakers of Bolton as PA to the Store Director. After working on Reception, she took on the role of PA to several of the Business Development Managers and the Director of Finance. She then became PA to the Managing Director. She now co-ordinates all events in the Core Technology Facility. Alison is the point of contact should you wish to hold an event at the CTF.

Adam Casey

Events Facilities Assistant

Adam joined UMIC in October 2007 as a Receptionist after working in the University of Manchester Medical School. He now provides support to the Events Co-ordinator, assisting with the organisation of events in the Core Technology Facility.

Sarah Acton

Sarah joined UMIC in November 2006 after gaining her degree at The University of Manchester. She spent six months working on the Incubator Reception before becoming a PA. Sarah is the point of contact for general enquiries regarding the Manchester Incubator Building and the Core Technology Facility.

Paula Smith

Incubator Receptionist

Paula has worked for UMIC since January 2000 after working for eight years in various roles as a residential social worker. She initially worked on the Manchester Incubator Reception, then moved to the CTF when it opened in 2006. As well as her reception duties, she provides vital support to the Events Co-ordinator and Building Management Team, and ensures the smooth running of meetings and conferences in the CTF.

Tasneem and Helen share responsibility for our reception in the Core Technology Facility.

In addition to their reception duties, Tasneem and Helen provide vital administrative assistance to UMIC staff.

Marie Sutton

Office Assistant

Marie joined UMIC in November 2007 after working in various administrative roles. She provides vital administrative support to the building management team and the Office Manager, as well as reception duties, sorting and franking all mail, and dealing with all the stationery needs of the company.

Colin Fowler

Building Manager

Colin worked as an R&D; laboratory technician at Shell Research Limited, before coming to UMIC in January 2001 as a Building Services Manager.

Colin is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of both the Core Technology Facility and the Incubator Building.

Mike Sharrock

Building Assistant

Mike was a self employed thermal insulation installer for 15 years, working in industrial, agricultural and domestic environments. He then spent 4 years working on the facilities team at BUPA, before joining UMIC in June 2007.

He supports the Building Manager with the day-to-day maintenance of the Incubator Building and Core Technology Facility, carrying out a diverse range of duties.

Tony Walker

Incubation Manager

Tony heads up UMIC’s Hi-tech business unit, managing and running UMIC’s incubation facilities –North Campus Incubator, One Central Park Technology Centre and Broadstone Knowledge Mill- and the associated tenancies and business support. Tony worked for Royal Mail for fourteen years during which time he gained a BA(Hons) and postgraduate Institute of Direct Marketing Diploma. He had responsibility for developing the marketing strategy for 350k customers in their North West SME channel including e-commerce and direct marketing promotion activity.

After leaving Royal Mail he took up his appointment as a Business Development Manager in UMIST with responsibility for developing ICT related intellectual property and business creation. He developed the Information Technologies – Venture Centrethat supported software and internet related license and spinout opportunities and oversaw the planning and building of North Campus Incubator. He has been responsible for attracting in various grant funding awards of over £2m for strategic schemes to support business start-up and technology transfer in the high technology sector. In October 2004 he joined UMIC to work on its Hi-tech business activities and run the One Central Park Technology Centre. In 2006 Broadstone Knowledge Mill came under the Hi-tech portfolio.

He has been a director and chairman of a £10m Manchester based social housing company during which time he helped improve the transformation of the business.

Jill joined UMIC in May 2008, after working in various roles at The University of Manchester. Jill provides operational and administrative support for North Campus Incubator, One Central Park and Broadstone Knowledge Mill.
