The UK Government has reduced Corporation Tax levels to encourage business development and investment. According to the latest data, UK Corporate Tax rates are among the lowest in Europe when compared to the other main EU economies, and compare favourably to other major global economies. Also, generous R&D tax incentives are available to encourage innovation in the UK. The R&D tax credit works by allowing companies to deduct up to 150% of qualifying expenditure on R&D activities when calculating their profit for tax purposes. Companies which are SMEs can, in certain circumstances, surrender this tax relief to claim payable tax credits in cash from the HM Revenue & Customs. Large companies and SMEs involved in R&D may also be able to claim R&D capital allowances.
