Launch of Stockport Incubation Programme
Tuesday 11th April, 2006
UMIC is delighted to announce its involvement in the launch of a new incubator programme in Stockport at the Broadstone Knowledge Mill. UMIC will provide its expertise in business incubation, mentoring and commercialisation along with its partner organisations including Stockport Council, TBV Business Services and Broadstone Knowledge Mill Ltd. This is happening in a mill that has been a landmark building since it was established 100 years ago, that has now been refurbished to accommodate new high technology businesses of tomorrow in flexible business space.
It is one part of a major regeneration plan to expand and diversify the economic base of the local area. Creating an urban village that is a lively centre in which to live, work and play. In order to galvanise this opportunity Broadstone Knowledge Mill owner, Richard Sym, is supporting the development of the business incubator programme. Richard said The Incubator will begin to develop the nascent businesses that will add value to the local economy and act as a catalyst for attracting other business in.
Opening the Incubator, and soon to be resident in it, was Jayne Lawton. Stockport based Jayne was recently made British Female Innovator of the Year 2006 and Packard Bells Independent Businesswomen of the year. Jayne scooped the award with her invention, the simple but ingenious Grobox: dig a hole, add water and the box does the rest. Jayne said Im looking forward to moving into the Incubator and developing Grobox here and am also designing some community gardens for the people of Reddish; to help in building the urban village.
Jack Glonek of Stockport Council said This is just the sort of business space that is helping to attract the businesses of the future to Stockport and we are looking forward to seeing even more entrepreneurs such as Jayne set up and grow in the area.
The incubation programme will also see a range of activities involving other partners from the education, business support and private sector.
Tony Walker of UMIC said It is great that we can assist in getting this regeneration from a concept to a reality. This area has got many exciting opportunities to pursue and our role is to help support local entrepreneurs best efforts to achieving these in a supportive environment. The incubator will attract in the businesses of the future that will benefit from a package of business support and training and development
