Manchester Bioscience Incubator (MBI) (48 Grafton Street)

The Manchester Bioscience Incubator combines the latest in laboratory facilities with an excellent support infrastructure, located in the centre of Manchester’s academic and clinical heartland. The Manchester Incubator opened in 1999 and is the UK’s first campus-based dedicated bioscience incubator.

Key features:

  • Located in the vibrant Manchester Technology Quarter
  • Serviced by UMIC’s experienced facilities support team.
  • Comprises 86,500 ft² (9320 m²) bioscience incubator facilities and related infrastructure
  • 16 turnkey laboratory suites, each 1,000 ft² (93 m²), comprising fitted out write-up and wet-lab areas, equipped for functioning at ACGM Containment Level 2 with the capability of conversion to Level 3.
  • Site facilities appropriate for a fully functional biotech operational facility, including shared secondary support equipment, controlled access and full 24h security cover and IT support including broadband access.
  • Professional reception, offices, meeting rooms, large informal interaction areas
  • Hickmans Restaurant offering full catering facilities
  • Staff and visitor car parking areas.

Core Technology Facility (CTF) (46 Grafton Street)

The Core Technology Facility provides grow-on and incubation space for biotechnology and hi-tech start-ups or SMEs that complements the existing Bioscience Incubator [hyperlink to Incubator]. Opened in 2006, this state-or-the art facility was funded by the NWDA and ERDF and is aimed primarily at the increasing number of fast growing biotechnology and hi-tech companies in the Northwest region.

The CTF comprises of two floors of commercial space for business activities and the University of Manchester has invested in the additional two floors, which houses academic research activity for its Faculties (Life Sciences and Medicine).

Key features:

  • Located in the vibrant Manchester Technology Quarter
  • Serviced by UMIC’s experienced facilities management team.
  • Comprises average gross internal area of 28,000 ft² (2,600 m²) per floor and a total area of 173,000 ft² (16,060 m²).

Commercial space comprises:

  • 4 modular laboratories each 2,153 ft² (200 m²) comprising fitted out write-up and wet-lab areas, equipped for functioning at ACGM Containment Level 2 with the capability of conversion to Level 3.
  • 4 “flexi-lab” areas each 5,380 ft² (500 m²) of grow-on space (either wet-lab, office or a combination of both)
  • Site facilities appropriate for a fully functional biotech operational facility, including shared secondary support equipment, controlled access and full 24h security and IT support including broadband access
  • Professional reception, inner atrium and street area
  • Staff and visitor parking areas
  • Conferencing facilities – a suite of rooms capable of holding 8, 20 or 50 people and conferencing and exhibition area holding up to 100 people available for booking by tenants or external users. Contact Alison Warren for more details.

North Campus Incubator

The North Campus Incubator is located in the heart of the University of Manchester’s city campus. It is designed to accommodate high technology based companies established by the University of Manchester.

In addition it actively seeks to support technology based start-up companies from across the North West region that would benefit from close proximity to the university research laboratories and knowledge base.

It also provides technology commercialisation services offered by the University of Manchester Incubator Company Ltd and its sister company the University of Manchester Intellectual Property Ltd www.umip.com. The high quality facilities management is provided by Manchester Science Park Ltd www.mspl.co.uk

Mohammed Chaudhury of Spartapay, one of the incubator residents said ‘This iconic structure makes it an ideal facility for Spartapay to develop and progress its ideas and innovation into new products. Its central position enabled us to easily establish research and technology transfer collaboration with the university. To date UMIC have helped us secure a SMART R&D; award, recruit a PhD to develop future product strategy for us through a science council funded CASE award and link us up with a number of potential funders and sources of contracts”

One Central Park – is an £18m joint venture between Manchester’s three universities, MANCAT and Manchester Science Park (msp). One Central Park is the first centre in the UK to offer further and higher education programmes under one roof together with opportunities for nurturing enterprise and growing businesses.
