The bloomtrigger Story…
Volume 1 – The James Sutton story.
The original concept began while I was developing a marketing strategy for a new product during a summer job, after graduating in Architecture at Nottingham University. It was because of this I started my research into rainforest conservation; and soon became strongly passionate about the importance of this cause. The more I explored the issue, the more aware I became of the increasing relevance of protecting rainforest in our current climate and the surprisingly low level of understanding amongst the majority of people. Put simply, global deforestation is a vast and complex issue, but there are effective solutions being implemented to tackle this problem. However, the level of resources currently being committed is vastly falling short of what is required to address this issue. It is generally acknowledge that global deforestation could be stopped completely with relatively little financial support from the developed world. The key question is: how to engage the millions of individuals who feel so far removed from this problem and powerless to have any meaningful influence to affect it? I believe it is this ‘gap in the market’ that bloomtrigger can act to fulfil; a collision of social, economic, technological, environmental and creative forces present in our society today.
I soon left my job to pursue the idea full time. I focused on turning a concept into establishing a 21st century styled organisation, that would be focused solely upon raising money and awareness for rainforest conservation, while leaving the experienced rainforest organisations to do what they do best; overseeing the actual conservation. Unfortunately I was forced to put the project on hold after discovering I was in urgent need of heart surgery. During the recovery period for this, I recorded all my thoughts for the project and divided my time between increasing my understanding of rainforests and exploring the various technical requirements for the project. After 6 months, eventually I received the all clear from my surgeon. Determined to get away, I set off travelling the globe to complete my return to full health. First stop Tokyo!
It was while making my way across Australia I took the opportunity to volunteer for a local charity ‘Rainforest Rescue’. On a personal level I was able to experience the epic scale of the rainforest first hand. In terms of my project, I was very grateful for the contacts I made and after witnessing how this small-scale charity operates it left me further consolidated in my belief of my idea and the potential far-reaching influence of my project.
Since returning from my travelling I committed myself completely to turning this project into reality. While I supported myself with part-time work as a cocktail bar man, I spent my remaining time on developing the numerous elements that would create bloomtrigger.
I began to develop bloomtrigger as a non-profit organisation, which specialises in raising money and awareness for rainforest conservation through a creative mix of the latest viral marketing techniques. The aim of bloomtrigger is to create a series of projects, the first being ‘the bloomtrigger project’. The intention is to create the biggest, global, digital art project of our time. As well as raising awareness; the purpose is to generate £100 million in order to protect one million hectares of the most biodiverse rainforest on the planet.
