Update on schemes for SME’s and the community available from BBSRC

Enterprise Fellowships: Developing commercial potential of research

BBSRC and The Royal Society of Edinburgh seek proposals to the Enterprise Fellowships Scheme to support researchers who wish to play a key role in the commercialisation of their research. The Fellowships provide salary and formal business training, allowing the Fellows to focus on developing the commercial potential of their research over a 12-month period.

The Fellowships are available to academic staff, research staff and postgraduates with relevant experience employed by a UK Higher Education Institution or a BBSRC-sponsored Research Institute. The business idea may be in any area within BBSRC’s remit provided the original research was largely funded through the Research Council. The next closing date for applications is 5pm on 19 May 2009, and Fellowships are expected to start in October 2009.

Application forms and further details are available from: www.royalsoced.org.uk/research_fellowships/bbsrc.htm

Royal Society Industry Fellowships: Promoting knowledge exchange between academia and industry

The Industry Fellowship Scheme promotes collaboration between the UK science base and industry by supporting the exchange of mid-career researchers either from the science base to industry or vice-versa. The Fellowships are administered by the Royal Society and co-sponsored by the BBSRC. The scheme has successfully supported researchers in the  biosciences and has involved a range of industry sectors, from large  pharmaceutical companies to Biotech SMEs.

The deadline for applications for the next round of funding is 12 March 2009 with further details at www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/people_information/industry_fellowship_scheme.html or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: [email protected], Tel: 01793 413390.

Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme competition 2009: Raising awareness of commercialisation in postgraduate and postdoctoral scientists

The Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme aims to raise awareness of the commercialisation of bioscience research amongst postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. Participants compete in teams to develop a hypothetical business idea with the help of expert mentors from the biotechnology sector. Workshops are held throughout the UK, feeding into a National Final with a prize of £1000 for the winning team.

The 2009 YES Competition has been launched with a closing date for entries of 17 June 2009.

Industry Interchange Programme: Short term exchange of researchers between the science base and industry

The Industry Interchange Programme supports the short-term exchange, in either direction, of researchers between the science base and industry. The objective of the programme is to support interchanges that provide strategic advantage to the UK science base and industry arising from reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or knowledge, and an increased understanding of scientific issues of common concern. Individual awards are likely to be in the range of £10,000 – £30, 000 and unlikely to exceed £50,000.

The next closing date for applications is 01 April 2009. Application forms and further details can be found at: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/people_information/industry_interchange.html, or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: [email protected], Tel: 01793 413390.

Modular Training for Industry: Supporting the development of Masters-level courses for graduates in industry

The Modular Training for Industry Programme enables UK Higher Education Institutions and BBSRC-sponsored Institutes to provide up to date, industrially-relevant training for graduates working in industry. Pump-priming support is provided for the development of individual training modules at Masters level. Evidence of a clear industrial need for the training is a key requirement of funding. Therefore, the training should be developed in close collaboration with industry.

The next closing date for applications is 18 February 2009. Application forms and further details can be found at: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/training/index.html , or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: [email protected], Tel: 01793 413390.

Post-Doc Knowledge Transfer Partnerships : innovative projects involving industry and academia

BBSRC continues to sponsor with TSB, and other partners, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs).  Each partnership, lasting between 1 and 3 years, employs one or more high-calibre KTP Associates (early-career researchers) to work on an innovative project within a company. Associates are jointly supervised by the participating industrial and academic partners. Public sector support is delivered through a grant to the academic partner.  In addition, a contribution from the participating company fully covers the academic partner’s cost of participation.  BBSRC is working with the TSB to promote “Post Doc KTPs”, aimed at ongoing partnerships established for example through a CASE or Industrial CASE studentship, which provide the opportunity for the Associate to embed the outcomes of their research project into the partner company. More information on KTPs can be found on the BBSRC website at www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/people_information/knowledge_transfer_partnerships.html and on the KTP website at www.ktponline.org.uk or by contacting Adam Webb, Email: [email protected]; Tel: 01793 413390

Follow-on funding pathfinder scheme: funding to carry out preliminary commercial activities

BBSRC’s new Follow-on Funding Pathfinder Scheme enables potential follow-on funding applicants to secure small amounts of funding to carry out preliminary commercial activities. These activities will help to develop a clearer understanding of the commercial potential of the outputs of a research grant and assist with the development of a full follow-on funding application and be useful in targeting the commercialisation of the work.

Follow-on Fund: proof of concept funding

The Follow-on Fund provides funding for ‘proof of concept’ at the very early stage of turning research outputs into a commercial proposition. It funds work to convert an idea into a robust business plan where a route to commercialisation is clear, for example a spin-out (seed or venture finance) or licensing opportunity.

The next closing date for applications is 20 February 2009.

Industrial Impact Fellowship – embedding industrial skills in academia

Industrial Impact Fellowships aim to enhance the impact of BBSRC-funded research by enabling highly skilled research and technology leaders from Industry to bring their industrial skills, management, and commercial experience to enhance collaboration and partnership between the academic and industrial sectors. Fellows would be expected to demonstrate how their industrial background and research will benefit the work of a BBSRC-funded centre, institute, or academic department with significant BBSRC-funded research programme.
